Computers & Science Labs
The computer and science labs have recently been renovated and updated to suit the needs of the students at both the
lower and middle school levels.
The computer lab on the lower level services grades kindergarten to grade 1 with
a phonics-based reading program. This revolutionary reading software,
Read, Write and Type, includes phonics, spelling, keyboarding, and
word processing. Children begin by connecting each sound with a
friendly keyboard storyteller. The keyboard storytellers present
their phonemes, their place on the keyboard, and their favorite
stories. Children learn how new sounds come alive and start to make
connections between familiar pictures and the correct sounds in
each word. Soon students move on to creating their own stories.
This program makes reading and writing fun for the students at an
early age.
Our computer lab on the upper level services grades 2 through 8. Technology is integrated across all academic disciplines. Students wil conduct research and analyze the authenticity of web sites. Students are introduced to Mavis Beacon software,
which gives the students the ability to develop strong typing skills. Programs such as Math Blasters and Grolier Encyclopedia enhance the students’ math ability and expose them to using the computer to assist in their studies.
The students also use Microsoft Office to develop Excel spreadsheets, give Powerpoint presentations and use Word to write papers.
The science lab, which was completed in 2001 with the help of many local foundations, gives the students hands-on experience
with experiments found in the text. Students experience high school level science by using the lab to observe cells
through a microscope. Grade six studies Earth Science, which is everything from matter to minerals. Grade seven studies Life
Science, an introduction to biology. Grade eight studies Physical Science – in essence a combination of
introductory physics and chemistry.
Experiments for all grades are performed in the lab and reinforce the lessons taught in the text. Students write formal lab reports based on the scientific method.
