Extra Curricular Activities
Ski Club
Students in Grades 3 through 8 are invited to join the SBS Ski Club. This very popular club meets after school on Wednesday for the first 5 weeks of the new year. Students and chaperones travel to Ski Sundown for an evening of skiing or snow boarding. Lessons are available for all levels of expertise. The cost involves lift tickets and transportation to and from the ski area. Equipment rental and lessons are an optional package.
Student Council
Our Student Council members for 2011-2012 are:
- President - TBD
- Vice President - TBD
- Secretary - Treasurer - TBD
- Eighth grade officers as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer lead the student council after an annual schoolwide election. In addition to the officers, representatives from grades 2 through 8 are elected to represent their grade level. Their individual classes elect these representatives and alternates. The students must maintain a “C” average in all classes at all times. This organization affords the students the opportunity to learn leadership skills, including decision-making. Some of our graduates have gone on to serve in public office as mayor, town council representatives and state representatives. With the help of teacher moderators, the student council plans and organizes schoolwide service projects and social events, such as a Red Cross Blood Drive, community service, SBS Halloween Social for grades 3-5 and dances for grades 6-8. Some examples of their hard work are: Thanksgiving food drives for the needy, holiday cards to the elderly, and remembering families who have suffered tradgedy or loss.
School Newspaper- The Bulldog Bugle
This Middle School activity gives those students who enjoy writing the opportunity to publish articles along with school events in the school newspaper. An eighth grade student is selected as editor-in-chief, along with assistant editors and reporters. The newspaper is now published monthly and distributed to parents and students, and is now available on our website. (Click here to read the latest edition.)
Scouts
Saint Brigid School is fortunate to have its own scout troops for both girls and boys. Daisys start in Kindergarten and Tigers start in grade 1 and continue through 5th grade. Some of our recent graduates have reached Eagle Scout. Over night trips to Battleship Cove and the Springfield Science Center enrich our students.
Band
Students in Grade 4 are introduced to band. Future Musicians, an organization affiliated with the Archdiocese, runs the band program. Skilled and qualified instructors teach musical instruments during the day to the students. Added to the program this year were private lessons after school to give the students an added opportunity to improve beyond the regular schedule. Students quickly move up to advanced band and perform with other Catholic Schools in the Hartford Archdiocese. Students perform in two concerts each year.
